The collection consists of seventy-three photographs primarily relating to Alaska and to the United States Revenue Cutter Service in the 1880s. Included are photographs of officers who served on the Thomas Corwin, the Richard Rush, and the Bear, passengers on the Thomas Corwin, the cutters Thomas Corwin, Richard Rush, and Bear, kayaks and umiaks, and various places and towns in Alaska. There are also photographs of Siberia.

Thomas W. Benham was an officer in the United States Revenue Cutter Service. In the 1880s, he served as a second lieutenant on several cutters operating in the North Pacific, along the coast of Alaska, and in the Bering Sea.
